How To

How do I replace a cracked window?

The most common home improvement task is to replace broken windows. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. This repair will take only 30 minutes. You could end up causing more damage to your house if you don't know the best way to replace a damaged pane. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

To remove the old windowpane, you will first need to take out the screws that held it in place. Then undo the lock at the top center of the bottom section of the window frame. Next, lift the window slightly up so that it is no longer attached the sill plate (the steel bar at the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. Once the panes are removed, clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean the new glass

Use a dry paper towel or cloth to remove any dirt from the glass. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.

Third step: Reinstall the new glass

Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. Begin by gently pressing down on one end of the outermost panel with the tip a screwdriver. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. Move on to the next piece of pane. Push it into the opening in the frame. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. You can seal the gap between the panes with a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

If you are installing new glass, be sure to inspect the area where the break occurred. This will help determine if further repairs are necessary. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will add strength to the window while also acting as spacers to keep the glass in place during the expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing material.

Fifth step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will create a good seal between the glass and the surrounding wallboard. You can buy silicone caulking online or at hardware shops. You should choose a color to match the wall paint.

Allow the caulking to cure overnight. Once the caulking is fully set, don't disturb it. You could crack the caulking if you wait too long.
