How To

How do I replace a damaged window?

One of the most popular home improvement projects is to replace broken windows. This involves fixing any damage caused by the glass. The repair should take approximately 30 minutes. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.

First, remove the old glass from its frame

First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, pull the window up slightly so it's no longer attached to the sill plate (the metal bar below the floor). The last step is to gently loosen all remaining screws with a tool. After the panes have been removed from the window, clean them well.

Second step: Clean and polish the new glass

To remove dirt and grime from the glass' surface, use a paper towel or dry cloth. Use a spray bottle with water and alcohol to clean any debris that has gotten under the glass.

Third step: Reinstall the new glass

Attach the window panes to the frames. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push the pane into the opening of the frame. Next, insert the next pane by pressing it against the first pane. Continue inserting the windows until they are all assembled. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair any damage.

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will give strength to the window and act as spacers between the glass and the weatherproofing material.

The fifth step is to seal the area.

After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will seal the glass to the wallboard. You can buy silicone caulking online or at hardware shops. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Let the caulking dry overnight. After the caulking has dried completely, do not disturb it. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
