FAQ

What are the most popular handyman repairs?

Handymen are often called upon to repair roofs and windows, doors, gutters or siding. They also can install hot water heaters, air conditioning units, electrical systems, sheds, decks, fences, sheds and other items. When it comes to building or home improvement projects that cannot be performed by DIY homeowners, handymen can help with carpentry, plumbing, painting, drywall installation, landscaping, concrete work, fence construction, decking, tiling, and more.

What's the difference between a handyman or a carpenter, you ask?

Handyman services can be provided for a wide range of tasks, such as plumbing, electrical, carpentry, cabinet building, flooring, tiling and kitchen remodeling. Carpenters specialize in woodworking. They can build cabinets and walls, doors, windows or stairs.

Is it possible to have my faucets fixed by a handyman?

Although a handyman can handle minor repairs, he won't have the skills to complete major projects like wiring a house and installing custom cabinets. There are many things a handyman could do for minor home improvements.

Are there any requirements to be a handyman?

A license is not required to become an independent contractor in most States. However, you still must meet certain requirements:

  • At least 18 years of age
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • A four-week course in a vocational school.
  • Check your background through the Department of Licensing.
  • Register annually by paying $20

You will also require a business license as well as workers' compensation insurance.

Is it worth paying a handyman an hourly rate or per-project basis.

It comes down to personal preference. Some people prefer to pay an hourly rate so that they know how much their handyman costs. Others prefer to pay for each completed project since they may have multiple jobs simultaneously. Either way works fine.

What is the average time it takes to complete a DIY project?

A DIY project can take anywhere from 2 to 4 hours. The difficulty and complexity of the project will affect how long it takes.

How long does it take a handyman to finish a project?

It depends on the size and complexity of the project. It takes longer to complete smaller projects, while larger projects take less time. No matter how large the project is, a handyman can finish it in less than a week.

How To

How do I replace a damaged window?

One of the most popular home improvement projects is to replace broken windows. The task consists of repairing damage caused to the glass inside your house. This repair will take only 30 minutes. If you don't know how to replace broken glass, you could cause more damage to your home. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.

First, remove the old glass from its frame

To remove the old windowpane, you will first need to take out the screws that held it in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, raise the window so it isn't attached to the sillplate (the metal strip below the floor). The last step is to gently loosen all remaining screws with a tool. After the panes have been removed from the window, clean them well.

Second step: Clean your new glass

Use a dry paper towel or cloth to remove any dirt from the glass. If debris is stuck under the glass, try cleaning it with a spray bottle filled with water and rubbing alcohol.

The third step is to reinstall the glass

Reattach the window panels to the frames. Begin by pressing down on the outermost pane's lower edge with a screwdriver. Gently push your pane back into its opening. Next, move on to the next pane and press it against the frame before attaching it. Continue inserting the panes until the entire window is assembled. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth Step: Repair the area damaged

If you are installing new glass, be sure to inspect the area where the break occurred. This will help determine if further repairs are necessary. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will add strength to the window while also acting as spacers to keep the glass in place during the expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing material.

Fifth Step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass is replaced, apply silicone caulking to all edges of your window frame. This will create a seal between the glass frame and the wallboard. Silicone caulking can be purchased at hardware stores and online. It is important to match the color of the walls with silicone caulking.

Allow the caulking to cure overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
