How do I replace a cracked window?

One of the most popular home improvement projects is to replace broken windows. This involves fixing any damage caused by the glass. This repair will take only 30 minutes. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.

First, take the old glasses out of their frames

To remove the old windowpane, you will first need to take out the screws that held it in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, lift the window slightly up so that it is no longer attached the sill plate (the steel bar at the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. After the panes have been removed from the window, clean them well.

Second step: Clean your new glass

Use a dry paper towel or cloth to remove any dirt from the glass. To remove any dirt or other debris from the glass' surface, spray it with water and rub alcohol.

Third step: Reinstall the new glass

Reattach the window panels to the frames. Begin by gently pressing down on one end of the outermost panel with the tip a screwdriver. Gently push your pane back into its opening. Move on to the next piece of pane. Push it into the opening in the frame. Continue to insert the panes until you have assembled the whole window. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

Before installing the new glass, make sure to inspect the area around any cracks. If the break occurred near the corner of the window, install two small pieces of wood along each side of the hole. These wooden blocks will give strength to the window and act as spacers between the glass and the weatherproofing material.

Fifth step: Seal the repaired area

Apply silicone caulking around the edges of the frame after the glass has been replaced. This will seal the glass to the wallboard. Silicone caulking can be purchased at hardware stores and online. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Let the caulking set overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. You may crack the caulking by not waiting long enough.
