How to Replace a Broken Window?

Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. If you don't know how to replace broken glass, you could cause more damage to your home. This article will give you some helpful tips for replacing broken windows.

First, take the old glasses out of their frames

First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. Then undo the lock at the top center of the bottom section of the window frame. Next, lift the window slightly up so that it is no longer attached the sill plate (the steel bar at the floor). The last step is to gently loosen all remaining screws with a tool. Clean the panes thoroughly after they are taken out.

Second step: Clean the new glass

To remove dirt and grime from the glass' surface, use a paper towel or dry cloth. You can clean the glass with a spray bottle containing water and rubbing alcohol if there is any debris underneath.

Third step: Reinstall the new glass

Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push back the pane into place in the opening. Then move to the next pane, pushing it firmly against the previous pane before reattaching it. Continue inserting the panes until the entire window is assembled. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair any damage.

Before installing the new glass, make sure to inspect the area around any cracks. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will give strength to the window and act as spacers between the glass and the weatherproofing material.

Fifth Step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass is replaced, apply silicone caulking to all edges of your window frame. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. You can purchase silicone caulking at hardware stores or online. It is important to match the color of the walls with silicone caulking.

Let the caulking dry overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
