How do I replace a cracked window?
It is one of the most commonly performed home improvements. This task involves repairing any damage to your glass. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.
First, take the old glasses out of their frames
To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, lift the window slightly up so that it is no longer attached the sill plate (the steel bar at the floor). Use a pry to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes have been removed from the window, clean them well.
Second step: Clean the new glass
To remove dirt and grime from the glass' surface, use a paper towel or dry cloth. To remove any dirt or other debris from the glass' surface, spray it with water and rub alcohol.
Third step: Reinstall the new glass
Reattach the window panes into the frames. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. Then move to the next pane, pushing it firmly against the previous pane before reattaching it. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.
Fourth step: Repair the damage
To determine if additional repairs are necessary, inspect the area surrounding the hole before installing the glass. Two small pieces of wood should be placed along the edges of each hole if the crack is near the corner. These wooden blocks will add strength to the window while also acting as spacers to keep the glass in place during the expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing material.
Fifth Step: Seal the repaired area
Apply silicone caulking around the edges of the frame after the glass has been replaced. This will seal the glass to the wallboard. Silicone caulking can be purchased at hardware stores and online. It is important to match the color of the walls with silicone caulking.
Allow the caulking to cure overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. You may crack the caulking by not waiting long enough.
