How To

How to Replace a Broken Window?

The most common home improvement task is to replace broken windows. This task involves repairing any damage to your glass. The repair should take approximately 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

First, take out all the screws that are holding the glass in place. Next, undo the lock in the middle of the bottom section. Next, lift the window slightly up so that it is no longer attached the sill plate (the steel bar at the floor). Use a plier to loosen any remaining screws. Clean the panes thoroughly after they are taken out.

Second step: Clean the new glass

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.

Third Step: Reinstall the replacement glass

Reattach the window panes into the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue inserting panes until all windows are assembled. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

If you are installing new glass, be sure to inspect the area where the break occurred. This will help determine if further repairs are necessary. If the break occurred near the corner of the window, install two small pieces of wood along each side of the hole. These wooden blocks will give strength to the window and act as spacers between the glass and the weatherproofing material.

Fifth Step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. It is important to match the color of the walls with silicone caulking.

Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. You can cause cracking in the caulking if it isn't left enough time.
