How do you replace a broken window?
Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. You could end up causing more damage to your house if you don't know the best way to replace a damaged pane. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.
First step: Remove the old glass from its frame
First, take out all the screws that are holding the glass in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, pull the window up slightly so it's no longer attached to the sill plate (the metal bar below the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.
Second step: Clean your new glass
To remove dirt and grime from the glass' surface, use a paper towel or dry cloth. If debris is stuck under the glass, try cleaning it with a spray bottle filled with water and rubbing alcohol.
Third step: Reinstall the new glass
Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. Next, move on to the next pane and press it against the frame before attaching it. Continue inserting panes until all windows are assembled. Use a silicone caulk gun to seal the space where the panes meet.
Fourth step: Repair the damaged area
When installing the new glass, inspect the area around the hole to determine whether any additional repairs are needed. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.
Fiveth step: Seal the repair area
After replacing the glass, you can apply silicone caulking along the perimeter edges to the window frame. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. You can buy silicone caulking online or at hardware shops. Choose a color that matches your walls.
Allow the caulking to cure overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. You could crack the caulking if you wait too long.
