How to Replace a Broken Window?

One of the most popular home improvement projects is to replace broken windows. Repairing damage to glass within your home is the task. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. If you don't know how to replace broken glass, you could cause more damage to your home. This article will give you some helpful tips for replacing broken windows.

First step: Take the glass out of its frame

To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. Next, remove the lock at the top of the lower section of your window frame. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Next, remove any remaining screws using a pry instrument until they are loosen. Clean the panes thoroughly after they are taken out.

Step 2: Clean the new glasses

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. You can clean the glass with a spray bottle containing water and rubbing alcohol if there is any debris underneath.

Third Step: Reinstall new glass

Reattach the window panels to the frames. Start by pushing down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Gently push your pane back into its opening. Move on to the next piece of pane. Push it into the opening in the frame. Continue to insert the panes until you have assembled the whole window. You can seal the spaces where the panes meet using a silicone caulk pistol.

Fourth Step: Repair the affected area

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will provide strength for the window, as well as acting as spacers during the expansion or contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fourth step: Sealing the area

After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will create a good seal between the glass and the surrounding wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. You should choose a color to match the wall paint.

Let the caulking dry overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
