How To

How to replace a broken window

Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. The task consists of repairing damage caused to the glass inside your house. This repair will take only 30 minutes. If you don't know how to replace broken glass, you could cause more damage to your home. This article provides tips for how to replace broken windows.

First, remove the old glass from its frame

First, take out all the screws that are holding the glass in place. Next, undo the lock in the middle of the bottom section. Next, lift the window slightly up so that it is no longer attached the sill plate (the steel bar at the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean and polish the new glass

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. Use a spray bottle with water and alcohol to clean any debris that has gotten under the glass.

Step 3: Install the new glass

Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. Start by pushing down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Gently push back the pane into place in the opening. Next, insert the next pane by pressing it against the first pane. Continue to insert the panes until you have assembled the whole window. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damage

When installing the new glass, inspect the area around the hole to determine whether any additional repairs are needed. If the break occurred near the corner of the window, install two small pieces of wood along each side of the hole. These wooden blocks will be strong and can also act as spacers, keeping the glass in its place during expansion and contract of the weatherproofing.

Fifth Step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass is replaced, apply silicone caulking to all edges of your window frame. This will create a seal between the glass frame and the wallboard. Silicone caulking can be purchased at hardware stores and online. Make sure you choose a color that is consistent with the wall's existing paint.

Let the caulking set overnight. After the caulking has dried completely, do not disturb it. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
